Religious Education (also called CCD) is open to any child from pre-K (age 4) through high school. It is also a time for sacramental preparation for children who will be receiving their First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
A First Reconciliation and Communion two-year program is a common Catholic faith formation process that prepares children to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, beginning in the first grade. The first year focuses on foundational faith education, and the second year is dedicated to the specific instruction and preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion. Key components often include consistent Mass attendance, parent involvement, and specific sacramental preparation sessions and retreats.
The Two-Year Structure
Year 1: Foundational Faith Formation
This initial year focuses on basic religious education, teaching children about God, Jesus, the Church, and traditional Catholic prayers.
Students learn about the Mass and the importance of attending weekly services to understand the Eucharistic mystery.
Some parishes require a prior year of faith formation (like kindergarten) to be completed before starting the two-year process, while others allow it to begin in the first grade.
Year 2: Sacramental Preparation
This year involves more intense preparation for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation (Confession).
Students learn about sin, God's mercy, and the importance of forgiveness.
The focus then shifts to the Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Communion), with deeper instruction on the meaning of the Mass and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
Key Components of the Program
Parental Involvement: Parents are actively involved, with regular participation at Sunday Mass and often attending parent/child retreats and sessions to help reinforce their child's learning.
Mass Attendance: Consistent attendance at Sunday Mass is a crucial aspect of the preparation, helping children participate more meaningfully in the liturgy.
Special Meetings and Retreats: Families attend specific meetings and retreats focusing on the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion to deepen their understanding and prepare for the celebration.
Parish-Specific Requirements: Families are required to be registered members of the parish. Proof of Baptism is also required.
